More sustainable materials and circularity

Our vision

Raw materials have shaped our idea of world. According to the report “Pulse of the Fashion Industry”, by the Global Fashion Agenda and The Boston Consulting Group, the materials selected account for between 50% to 70% of the total environmental impact of an item of clothing. We therefore planned a journey to be able to source increasingly more sustainable raw materials, design items of clothing according to circularity principles and carry out initiatives aimed at recycling fabrics and giving them a new life.

Where we are
2021

We committed to:

  • formalize “Everyone can” criteria and set goals for our brands to have them increase the use of sustainable fabrics;
  • purchase an overall amount of 3.6% in weight of more sustainable materials;
  • launch a new program for the collection and recycling of used clothes in Terranova stores in Italy;
  • join the Circular Fashion Partnership project, promoted and managed by the Global Fashion Agenda (GFA), in order to recycle and manage production waste and byproducts according to a circular approach in the manufacturing countries.
2022

In 2022 we completed many initiatives, including:

  • exceeding the amount of 10% of the items of clothing manufactured with important intentional characteristics of sustainability that categorize them as an “Everyone can” item of clothing;
  • purchasing an overall amount of 4.3% in weight of more sustainable materials;
  • launching a new program for the collection and recycling of used clothes in Calliope stores;
  • drafting our Animal Welfare Policy.
2023

We continued to invest in sustainable materials, packaging and training.

  • about 30% of the garments ordered in the calendar year contain more sustainable fibers that classify them as “Everyone Can” garments.
  • About 11% in weight of more sustainable fibers in 2023, up from 4.3% in 2022.
  • 64.3% of main primary and secondary packaging sourced from more sustainable sources, 80% of which from FSC®-certified paper*
  • Renewed membership to the “Circular Fashion Partnership” project to collect and recycle textile production waste in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam.

* The data reported on the purchase of certified material are results of internal monitoring, and the burden of proving their veracity is on Teddy S.p.A.

Future goals

We are committed to:

  • join in 2024 and get certified to Textile Exchange’s standards;
  • by 2025, at least 50 % of garments ordered containing more sustainable fibers that classify them as “Everyone Can” garments;
  • at least 30% in weight of more sustainable raw materials purchased by 2025*
  • formally establish eco-design principles for all Teddy brands that represent guidelines for circular garment design along the value chain by the end of 2025;
  • achieve 80% of the volume of FSC® certified cardboard boxes by the end of 2025.

* It includes GRS and RCS-certified recycled synthetic fibers; GOTS and OCS-certified organic natural fibers; other certified f ibers (for example EcoVero™️, Repreve®). It does not include: BCI™️ cotton.

Where we are
2021

In 2021, when drafting our action plan, we:

  • started measuring our CO2 footprint to design a journey aimed at mitigating and reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • joined the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
2022

We achieved important goals:

  • 100% renewable energy in our Italian corporate headquarters and distribution hub;
  • 94% renewable energy in our Italian directly-operated stores.

Reduced emissions

Our vision

All our actions have an environmental impact on the world we live in and are going to leave to future generations. Fashion is required to turn the tide and work according to regenerative business models for people and the environment.
It is essential for us to give an active contribution to decarbonization in order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2025, as set by the European Union. We are voluntarily and publicly committed to reducing our Scope 1 & 2 absolute GHG emissions by 51% within 2031 compared to the reference year 2019. Furthermore, we set ourselves the goal to reduce emissions by 51% per sold product within the same timeframe.  Joining the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) allowed us to formalize and make our commitment tangible.

2023

We pursued the following initiatives.

  • Use of renewable energy from wind power accounts for 96% of our energy needs in our headquarters and the logistic hub in Rimini and for our directly-operated stores in Italy.
  • Increase in energy efficiency: reduced energy consumption by 18% in our headquarters in Rimini and by 12% in our headquarters in Bologna compared to 2022.
  • Significant reduction in heating consumption: 45% decrease in Rimini premises compared to 2022. J Installation of Building Management System (BMS) in 8 of our stores.
  • Launch of the “Better Store Program” through the measurement of environmental impacts of 14 representative stores of our brands throughout Italy.
  • Drafting of the tools “Green Principles for New Teddy Stores” and “Operation and Facility Maintenance Green Principles for Existing Teddy Stores” to improve social and environmental impacts throughout the store network.
Future goals

We plan to go ahead on our journey, being committed to:

  • reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 51% by 2031 compared to base year 2019;
  • reducing Scope 3 emissions per product sold by 51% by 2031 compared to base year 2019.
  • First application pilot of the “Green Principles for New Teddy Stores” and “Operation and Facility Maintenance Green Principles for Existing Teddy Stores” to the entire store network.

Control of processes respecting health and the environment

Our vision

To address environmental challenges, we have established an integrated environmental program, called GEP (Global Environmental Program), through which will have us committed to driving the company and its value chain, in the next 10 years, towards achieving the challenging goals in the four impact areas: chemicals, emissions, water and solid waste.

Moreover, we’re investing in an extensive mapping process of all our international suppliers and the manufacturing process within their own organisations.

We pay the greatest attention to garment quality control, in particular kidswear, in order to ensure the absence of chemicals potentially harmful for human health and the environment.

Such a commitment requires a strong collaboration between us and our suppliers.

Therefore, we joined the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) International Programme, whose purpose is to promote the use of sustainable chemicals, boosting innovation and the best practices in the textile industry.

Where we are
2021
  • we joined the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) International Programme for a responsible and sustainable chemical management throughout the entire production chain.
2022

By setting the guidelines for our stakeholders, we:

  • achieved the goal of 49% of suppliers joining the ZDHC Programme, in terms of value;
  • trained and provided support to wet processing plants in Bangladesh, where most of our processing suppliers are located, to make them understand and comply with ZDHC guidelines.
2023

In 2023, we committed to the following goals.

  • Early mapping of Tier 2 factories in the supply chain, involved in wet processes through our direct suppliers.
  • Adoption of the Facility Environmental Module (FEM) of the Higg Index by our direct Tier 1, and Tier 2 suppliers, namely wet-process facilities, such as laundries, dye houses, printers and tanneries.
  • Achievement of the “Impact Pioneer” level the ZDHC program for the brands, called BRANDS TO ZERO. The Program assesses the involvement of production chains and the efforts for the dissemination of the best practices for responsible chemical management.
Future goals

In order to reach our future goals, we plan to:

  • advance in the mapping of Tier 2 factories in the supply chain, involved in wet processes through our direct suppliers;
  • keep on promoting the adoption, compilation and sharing of the Facility Environmental Module (FEM) of the Higg Index among our direct Tier 1 suppliers and Tier 2 suppliers;
  • introduce an advanced IT System to track the production and distribution chain up to Tier 2 suppliers, integrating it with product orders;
  • keep the “Impact Pioneer” level of the ZDHC program for the brands, called BRANDS TO ZERO;
  • achieve the “Impact Accelerator” level of the ZDHC program for the brands, called BRANDS TO ZERO by 2025.
